Pirlo's Creativity and Artistry on Display at Euro 2012

Date Posted: 6/25/2012

Andrea Pirlo, the 33 year old Italian midfielder, put on a virtuoso performance against England in the Euro 2012 Championship held in Poland-Ukraine. The game ended in a goalless draw with Italy defeating England in a dramatic penalty shootout. However, the real story was the contrast in styles of play. The Italian coach, Cesaro Pandelli, noted in his post game comments that England played the ball long and looked to win ‘knock downs’ while Italy kept the ball on the ground and looked to ‘play futbol!’

It was Pirlo’s skill, creativity, and artistry that made it possible for the Italians to maintain possession of the ball for long periods of time whether completing short passes through the midfield or crafting longer passes to the feet of the forwards. Pirlo, described as a man not wearing a futbol uniform at all, but a tuxedo, waving his baton as if conducting an orchestra from midfield!

Andrea Pirol’s majestic performance continued even into the penalty shootout where he crafted the most delicate of sublime chips to beat an out stretched over committed England goalkeeper to bring Italy level and restore their psychological advantage in going on to win 4 -2 in PK’s.

Adrea Pirlo, a Creative Player worth emulating for the modern game!
