Brazil's Marta is Simply Marvelous

Date Posted: 10/6/2007

The Brazilian women handed the US Women's National Team their worse defeat ever in international competition at 4 - 0.  However, the game may well be remembered for the breathtaking skill of Marta who scored one of the most incredible goals in World Cup history.  Positioned wide on the left wing, outside the US penalty area and with her back to goal, Marta controlled a bouncing pass in the air with the inside of her right foot and then flicked the ball with the outside of her left foot up and around the tightly marking US defender.  Spinning to collect the ball on the turn she proceeded to dribble yet another US defender this time beating her opponent with a subtle fake opening her hips as if to shoot, but then taking the ball away to finish a strike past US goalie Briana Scurry.  The goal simply was a work of art!  Marta went on to receive the Golden Ball and Golden Boot for the tournament's MVP and leading scorer.  Not bad for the women the Brazilian's call 'Pele in skirts'!
